nilgiri’s, my favourite indian restaurant Ayshim, 27 November 202428 November 2024 The journey of Nilgiri’s began in Crows Nest in 1998. I personally didn’t witness it as I was not in Australia at the time. However, I remember their cook at home shop some years later while they had the St Leonards restaurant. I even wrote about it and you can read here. Anyways, that was before they knocked down the whole block and built a more modern complex with a lot of shops. Nilgiri’s in St Leonards was a lovely place, serving regional Indian food in a contemporary style from an open kitchen. They have private rooms, tiffin room and we certainly enjoyed the Sunday buffets and cooking classes. I still have the print-outs from one vegetarian cooking class we as a couple did there. Nilgiri’s today is in Cremorne (as seen above). It is not far from the iconic movie theatre: Hayden Orpheum. The owners, Ajoy and Meera, are still making fantastic dishes today with their contemporary twist for traditional and regional Indian dishes all the while changing their menu so often. This is one of those things I LOVE about Nilgiri’s and it certainly sets them apart from other Indian restaurants in Sydney is the fact that the menu is not restricted to one region or one style of Indian food. This is not the case for many Indian restaurants where they stick to one region only and wherever the owner comes from, that is only style of food they serve. In some cases, the menu never changes. Just a quick note here: they have won Restaurant & Catering Association’s ‘Best Indian’ award two years in a row. If what I’m saying here doesn’t mean a thing, then you should think about it after hearing this… Nilgiri’s can be found at this address:Shop 3 / 283 Military Road CREMORNEPhone: 9909 0063Website life in sydney
